NCIS star Mark Harmon Explains Why the Show Has Been ‘Successful’ – in 2014 Interview

Mark Harmon, who plays Special Agent Gibbs on NCIS, once explained why he thought the show was so popular. The show has been on the air since 2003, and it has been renewed for a 19th season. It is one of the most popular dramas of all time.

Harmon is rumored to want to leave NCIS but stayed so CBS wouldn’t cancel it. However, Harmon’s desire to leave does not diminish the show’s success. Since its inception a few years ago, it has been a ratings powerhouse for CBS. Despite its longevity, it has received high ratings. NCIS has also spawned three spinoffs: NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, and the soon-to-be-released NCIS: Hawai’i.

In a 2014 interview with Lary King, Harmon was asked to explain the success of NCIS among all the shows he’s worked on.

“You know, I think we put in a lot of effort,” he said. “It wasn’t always as successful as it is now, and I believe a lot of people are to blame.” I think it’s important how people are treated on this show, and you have to give credit to the cast and crew.”

Many actors initially attribute the success of a show to how the audience perceives it. Harmon felt it was important to emphasize the hard work and respect that the NCIS cast and crew bring to the table on a daily basis. That behind-the-scenes work environment, in his opinion, allows the show to thrive on camera.

Mark Harmon Explains Why He Thinks ‘NCIS’ Is Popular With Fans

“What do you think makes the show so popular?” King inquired.

“You know, I always thought there was a story.” We occasionally solve cr1mes. We don’t always. I believe you can be a writer, appear on the show, and write great case histories while still surviving as a writer. “You’ve been able to write characters, and now you have to be able to write humans, and that’s the part that’s left,” Harmon added of the NCIS writers room.

Harmon appears to believe that writing without heart or character in mind, even if the team solves an interesting case, will not result in a good procedural. The characters that people connect with are what keep NCIS on the air from season to season.

Season 18 of NCIS premiered in May and found Harmon’s character, Jethro Gibbs, in a precarious position after surviving a boat explosion. The 19th season will premiere on CBS this fall, with the show’s longevity attesting to its success.
