When NCIS: Origins set out to honor the late David McCallum, the beloved actor who played Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard for 20 seasons, the prequel didn’t have to look far for the perfect tribute.
British actor Adam Campbell, who previously portrayed a young Ducky in flashbacks, returns in the Oct. 28 episode of the 1990s-set series (CBS, 9 ET/PT). This time, he dons McCallum’s actual fedora, paired with the character’s signature bowtie.
“The first time I put it on, it felt like a crown,” Campbell said. “It was special.”
Carrying on McCallum’s Legacy
NCIS paid tribute to McCallum earlier in 2024 with “The Stories We Leave Behind,” co-written by Brian Dietzen (Jimmy Palmer). That emotional episode featured Michael Weatherly’s surprise return as Tony DiNozzo, helping Palmer tie a bowtie before Ducky’s memorial service – a touching nod to McCallum’s legacy.
Now it’s Origins’ turn. In the upcoming episode, a young Ducky meets Gibbs – now played by Austin Stowell – at Camp Pendleton. Executive producers David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal ensured the story stays true to NCIS canon, showing the duo’s early connection. Fans will also learn the reason Ducky famously calls Gibbs by his middle name, Jethro – and yes, it involves Jethro Tull.

A Musical Farewell
The tribute episode also features McCallum’s own music, including his song “The Edge” (famously sampled by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg in “The Next Episode”). It closes with McCallum’s haunting rendition of “Yesterday,” underscoring a montage dedicated to his memory.
“David was so proud of that song being sampled,” North recalled. “He told me, ‘Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre have been very good to me.’”
McCallum’s Blessing – and Mark Harmon’s Support
Before his passing in 2023, McCallum offered Campbell encouragement but never strict direction.
“He told me, ‘Always find the comedy and lightness, even in the grotesque,’” Campbell shared.
Mark Harmon, who narrates and executive produces Origins, also reached out personally.
“Mark wrote me to say, ‘You’ll meet new faces, and they’ll all be happy you’re there – maybe even David M. himself.’”
Producers say casting Campbell again was an easy choice.
“Adam embodies Ducky perfectly,” said North. “And David thought he was phenomenal.”
With McCallum’s hat, his music, and his spirit woven into every frame, NCIS: Origins ensures the legendary Ducky Mallard will never be forgotten.
