NCIS: Is Mark Harmon Coming Back To Beloved Show For Season 20..?

NCIS star Mark Harmon ended his 18-year run as the drama’s lead last year, and fans have been clamoring for him to return to the CBS show ever since.

So, what has Mark said, and how likely is it that he will return to the CBS show for its 20th season? We’ve done some research, and here’s what we’ve discovered…

As viewers will recall, Leroy Jethro Gibbs decided to retire from law enforcement and spend the rest of his days in scenic Alaska after his final case led him there in the fourth episode of season 19.

Mark clarified in a special featurette released to coincide with the season 19 DVD release that his character is still alive – and very much capable of resuming his role as Special Agent in Charge if necessary.

“I’m not done working. As far as I know, the character resides in Alaska “He added that he was pleased with how things were handled. “This character has chosen the path that it has. I thought it was honest and acceptable.”

Mark’s words give some hope that he might make a cameo or comeback in the future, though the plot of season 20 is being kept under wraps for the time being. The show will return to television screens in just a few weeks, on Monday, September 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Executive producer Steven D Binder, on the other hand, has hinted that viewers haven’t seen the last of Gibbs. Following his departure, Mark issued the following statement: “As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the show’s fabric.” Staying true to our characters has always been our north star, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go.

“So, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years, Gibbs’ future… Never underestimate Leroy Jethro Gibbs.”

Meanwhile, in a TV Line interview with CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl, the possibility of Mark reprising his role was raised, to which he responded, “everyone is aware that the door is open if he ever wants to pop in for an episode, or multiple episodes.”
