Michael Weatherly Reveals the ‘Challenge’ of Tony and Ziva’s Relationship in NCIS Spin-Off

The long-awaited NCIS spin-off, NCIS Tony and Ziva, has premiered on Paramount+ this month, finally reuniting Michael Weatherly (Tony DiNozzo) and Cote de Pablo (Ziva David) in their iconic roles. The series chronicles their life in Paris with their daughter, Tali, five years after Ziva was revealed to have staged her death.

Back in Character and Rebuilding Trust

Michael Weatherly shared his experience of returning to the characters, describing it as a mix of nostalgia and déjà vu, like revisiting a childhood home that feels slightly different.

He explained that the 10-episode season is about the “heroic epic cycle” of their family’s adventure. The core theme is exploring what it means for Tony and Ziva to rebuild trust and move past their “fragile treaty.” This truce is quickly shattered by a hacker att4ck and ensuing intrigue that puts their family in jeopardy, forcing them to find a way forward together.

Shocking Betrayal and Real-Life Friendship

A major plot twist in the fifth episode revealed that their Interpol ally Henry (James D’Arcy) was not the betrayer. The true mastermind was his superior, Interpol’s Secretary General Jonah (Julian Ovenden), who fatally stabbed and shot Henry.

James D’Arcy revealed the surprising real-life connection, telling USA Today that Julian Ovenden, who plays his character’s k1ller, is his best friend-D’Arcy was the best man at Ovenden’s wedding and they are godparents to each other’s children. D’Arcy joked about the “unadulterated joy” on Ovenden’s face while filming the violent scene.
