Maria Baez is Back: Marisa Ramirez to Return Several Times in ‘Boston Blue,’ Say Showrunners

Marisa Ramirez’s Det. Maria Baez made a surprise appearance in the Boston Blue premiere, and fans won’t have to wait long to see her again.
In the second episode, which aired Friday, Oct. 24, Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan decides to stay in Boston to be closer to his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen). The episode ends with a heartfelt conversation between father and son, highlighting the difficult choice for Danny and the long-distance strain it could place on his budding romance with Maria, sparked in the Boston Blue premiere. Danny assures Sean they’ll “figure it out,” and the wider Reagan family supports his decision.
Showrunners confirmed Maria will return multiple times this season. Co-creator Brandon Margolis told TVLine, “Baez will return – multiple times in the first season – and it’s a story we’re going to tell,” emphasizing the challenges of moving and leaving loved ones behind.
Boston Blue has already featured Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan), and the series recast Sean Reagan with Amonsen. Margolis teased the possibility of more familiar Reagans showing up: “We’re blessed that the Blue Bloods universe has so many rich characters to draw from, so there are a lot of opportunities.”
The spinoff follows Danny navigating a new city after a family incident, while integrating into a new law-enforcement family. He teams up with Sonequa Martin-Green’s Det. Lena Silver to uncover what happened with Sean and ultimately chooses to stay in Boston with her “one big happy, kind of confusing family.”
Margolis told Variety that continuing Danny and Maria’s story was key: “It’s about where they are a year after Blue Bloods ended and how that could complicate a move from New York to Boston. It was important we pay service to that relationship.”
