Fans of Blue Bloods have been buzzing ever since CBS announced the spinoff Boston Blue. One big question on everyone’s mind: Will Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) be part of the new series?
As of now, Baez isn’t officially confirmed. But Donnie Wahlberg, who is reprising his role as Danny Reagan, has teased that familiar faces from Blue Bloods could make appearances-including Baez.
The timing couldn’t be more perfect. In the Blue Bloods series finale, Danny finally asked Baez out on a date, fulfilling a long-simmering wish from fans who saw their undeniable chemistry for years. The move also honored a promise Danny made to his grandfather, Henry Reagan (Len Cariou), who urged him to open his heart again after losing his wife.
According to Wahlberg, the romantic ending was no accident.
“I think that was a lot of me really pushing,” Wahlberg told Variety. “I pushed a lot for some closure with that. I went to [writer] Siobhan O’Connor and said, ‘Listen, you’ve got to do something. They don’t need to get married, but show there may be a future for them-or at least that their relationship has really evolved.’”
That little spark could carry over into Boston Blue, which is being produced by CBS Studios in association with JBTV. The show is helmed by showrunners and executive producers Chad Gomez Sonnier and Ian Margolis, with Jerry Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg himself also serving as executive producers.
For now, fans will have to wait and see if Baez makes the leap to Boston. But if Wahlberg’s hints are anything to go by, Danny Reagan’s next chapter might not be a solo one.
