Long before ‘Bull’ Canceled, Michael Weatherly Teased His Return To ‘NCIS’

Michael Weatherly broke the hearts of NCIS fans when he left the show in 2016 after 13 seasons as Tony DiNozzo. Weatherly was on his way to launching his own drama series, Bull, at the time. Weatherly, on the other hand, is calling it quits after six seasons. And his announcement sparked speculation that he would be returning to TV’s most-watched drama.

Weatherly’s return to NCIS has yet to be confirmed by either Weatherly or CBS. Fans who follow Weatherly on social media, on the other hand, have been suspecting this move for some time.

Michael Weatherly has announced his departure from ‘Bull.’

Weatherly announced on Twitter on January 18 that he would be leaving Bull at the end of season 6.

“Good day, everyone! It’s been an honor to play Dr. Jason Bull, but after six seasons of incredible storylines, I’ve decided it’s time to pursue new creative challenges and bring his story to a close,” Weatherly wrote.

“It has been a privilege to work with this talented cast, crew, and writing/producing team who helped reinvent the legal drama.” Keep an eye out for a big series finale… Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has supported me. You will always be a member of the Bull family!”

‘Bull,’ a CBS drama, has been canceled after six seasons.

Weatherly’s announcement omitted the fact that CBS had canceled the series. The network responded to Weatherly’s announcement with its own.

Bull had “established itself as a ratings winner” over the last six seasons, according to CBS, because of its “fresh take on the judicial process” that TV viewers had never seen before. The network also announced that the show had been officially canceled.

“We extend our gratitude to the talented cast… the incredible creative team… and our hardworking crew for bringing these innovative stories to life,” CBS said in a statement, according to TV Line.

“We also thank our loyal viewers and look forward to providing them with a final run of compelling episodes filled with the drama’s trademark humor, intelligence, and twists.”

Before CBS canceled ‘Bull,’ Michael Weatherly teased a return to ‘NCIS.’

Bull’s cancellation came as no surprise to fans of the scandal-plagued series. It also fueled speculation that Weatherly would return to NCIS, which his social media followers had suspected for some time.

In November 2021, the 53-year-old shared a photo of himself and his former co-star Mark Harmon (Leroy Jethro Gibbs) on the cover of a 2013 issue of TV Guide.

“NCIS Scoop!” read the headline. And the interview with Harmon and Weatherly for the outlet was about “life after Ziva.” Weatherly simply wrote in the caption of his post, “That time this happened: #ncis.”

Since his departure from ‘NCIS,’ the alum has teased his return.

In December, he captioned a selfie, “This guy woke me up this morning.” Then I realized it had all been a dream. He couldn’t get Gibbs off his mind. As well as his shoulder holster. “The #ncis dream.”

Weatherly tweeted a photo of himself on the set of NCIS season 19 in August 2021. In the photo, he is looking directly at the camera while wearing a cap and jacket that look eerily similar to those worn by NCIS agents. Weatherly wrote in the caption, “#ncis Camera is King.”

These are just a few of the most recent instances of Weatherly’s NCIS social media teasing. They do, however, go back years. Almost to the point where he left.

Michael Weatherly departed following Cote De Pablo’s departure.

Many fans wanted Weatherly to return as DiNozzo because of his relationship with Ziva David (Cote de Pablo). After season 11, she left the show. And Weatherly admits that after Ziva left, it was time for DiNozzo to leave as well.

“The badinage and sparring and flirting between [Tony and Ziva] and how they would swing from siblings to near lovers and back to buddies, that was gone,” Weatherly explained at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in 2016. “And then I realized I’d stayed at the party for far too long.”

Is it safe to assume that if Weatherly returns to NCIS, Ziva will follow? Fans will have to wait and see what happens.

Bull airs new episodes on Thursday nights on CBS. NCIS will return to Monday nights on February 28th, following the Winter Olympics.
