In his most recent post, NCIS’ Michael Weatherly pays a sweet nod to on-screen father Robert Wagner

In one of his most recent social media posts, NCIS legend Michael Weatherly paid a sweet tribute to his on-screen father Robert Wagner, proving that the feel-good NCIS relationships are still alive and well.

Tony DiNozzo Senior (played by Robert Wagner) has endeared himself to NCIS fans as Tony DiNozzo’s no-nonsense father for the better part of a decade and over a dozen episodes (Michael Weatherly). Even after Weatherly left the CBS show, Wagner, 92, reappeared to reunite with the likes of Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and co to share an update on his son’s health.

And, despite the fact that the on-screen father and son duo hasn’t been seen together in quite some time, Weatherly has shown that his affection for the characters is as strong as ever.

In fact, the two last appeared on-screen together in NCIS in the season 13 finale, Family First, in 2018.

But, on Twitter over the weekend, Weatherly couldn’t help but pay tribute to the legendary actor by sharing a throwback photo with his 467.5k followers.

Weatherly captioned a photo of himself on the set of a project prior to his NCIS days, “I’m having a Robert Wagner Flashback…

“As my hair remembers what it was like to have hair.” We shot this in Australia, by the way, and it was absolutely incredible. #thursdaythrowback after #darkangel and before #NCIS.” (Sic)

And the sweet nod to his pal and on-screen parent was met with a flood of supportive messages, including one or two requests for an NCIS reunion.

Marcella Pagano responded on Twitter to a selfie of the two actors, saying, “Still together! @M Weatherly “Strong friendships last for many years!!”

“I remember the episodes of NCIS with Robert Wagner, it was a pleasure to see you together, you really looked like father and son!!” reminisced @PaolaCalcaterra.

Luz Angela Vallejo chimed in, saying, “MW & RW, you’re absolutely fantastic both in front of and behind the camera.”

“I wish you could do something else with your TV dad.” And your hair is still stunning, a big hug from Colombia.”

“Two of my favorite guys the #DiNozzo men,” said @donutsdebsdibs. RJ was born to play your father.

“My ultimate wish would be to see another #NCIS reunion.” I hope everything is going well for him. We’re all sending our love and best wishes.”

“What about two exceptional men fantastic actors of great talent also static and beautiful?” said Lucia Scanu. I hope to see you in other scenes soon.

“Michael, good memories never d1e, and you still have the hair, so even if you lose it, you’ll always be a charming man.”

It’s been three years since Wagner last appeared on NCIS, but his return has long been anticipated by fans and even the show’s producers.

EPs Frank Cardea and Steven Binder told TVLine back in 2020 that C0v1d made a return in the then-18th season impossible, but it’s not out of the question in the future.

“RJ is always excited to be on the show, and we are always excited to have him,” they said.

“However, with actors of that age, we’ll just have to wait and see where the C0V1D goes.” In February, RJ turned 90. “And he’d have to travel.”

The pair praised the actor, saying, “He’s the youngest 90-year-old I’ve ever met.” When you call him, he sounds like he’s in his thirties.

“He’s not quite ready to return yet, but you could definitely see him in the second half of the year.”
