Why Donnie Wahlberg’s Big Demand Could Put the Blue Bloods Spinoff at Risk

Donnie Wahlberg is returning to CBS with Boston Blue, a spin-off and successor to Blue Bloods. The new series follows Danny Reagan as he moves from New York City to Boston, likely continuing his work in law enforcement but leaving the rest of the Reagan family behind.

While the new show will have ties to Blue Bloods, it’s set to stand on its own with a fresh cast that includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, and Maggie Lawson.

A Controversial Goodbye

After 14 seasons, Blue Bloods ended in December 2024 with its finale, “End of Tour.” Despite steady ratings and a loyal fan base, CBS chose not to renew the series, even after the cast agreed to pay cuts to keep it going. Tom Selleck, who played patriarch Frank Reagan, was openly frustrated by the decision, calling it a mistake. The network, however, opted to close the book on one of its longest-running dramas and move forward with Boston Blue.

Wahlberg’s Hope for a Familiar Face

Wahlberg has reportedly pushed for Tom Selleck to appear in Boston Blue. Sources say it wouldn’t be a full-time role-just occasional cameos out of mutual respect and their close working relationship. Selleck is said to be open to the idea.

Why Selleck’s Return Could Hurt the Spin-Off

While fans would love to see Frank Reagan again, early appearances could overshadow Boston Blue’s new story and characters. The show already faces high expectations from viewers still upset about Blue Bloods’ cancellation. Bringing back Selleck too soon could make it feel like Blue Bloods season 15 instead of a new beginning.

For Boston Blue to succeed, Danny needs to forge his own path without leaning on his father. If the series gives him room to grow independently, it could honor Blue Bloods’ legacy while carving out something fresh for longtime fans.
