Donnie Wahlberg Fights to Bring Tom Selleck to ‘Boston Blue’ Spinoff: ‘We Need Him’

Casting is underway for Donnie Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods offshoot, Boston Blue, and he’s pushing hard to get his longtime friend and former co-star Tom Selleck involved.

“Donnie’s a loyal guy, and he’s going to fight for Tom to get a piece of the action,” a source tells Closer. “They’re still very close and talk often. Donnie knows how disappointed Tom was about Blue Bloods ending, and he wants to do this for him – not just out of loyalty, but because he loves working with him.”

Though Tom, 80, isn’t demanding anything – he’s currently working on a new Jesse Stone project – Donnie is hoping for at least a recurring role or a cameo. “Even if Tom isn’t in it full-time, showing up now and then would be a good fit for him at this stage in life,” the source added.

Blue Bloods ended in December 2024 after nearly 15 years on air. Fans were vocal about wanting more, and in early 2025, CBS greenlit Boston Blue, starring Donnie along with Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, and Maggie Lawson.

A second insider confirmed that Tom is open to making appearances: “He didn’t want to say goodbye to Frank Reagan, so he’s very interested in returning in some way. Donnie and Tom became like family over the years. They were both emotional filming that last dinner scene, but with this new show, there’s a real chance they could share the screen again – even if it’s not around the dinner table this time.”
