Donnie Wahlberg Is Back! First Look at His Return in Boston Blue Spinoff Video

Danny Reagan is officially back. The first public footage of the Blue Bloods spin-off Boston Blue has been revealed by Instagram user @bostonbluefans. The clip shows Danny and Sean Reagan racing through a crowd to a body on the street, with Danny shouting that they’re NYPD before urging Sean to call it in.

Blue Bloods was a huge hit for CBS, starring Donnie Wahlberg (Danny), Tom Selleck (Frank), Bridget Moynahan (Erin), and Len Cariou (Henry). However, rising production costs in New York led to the show’s cancellation. CBS quickly greenlit a sequel series, Boston Blue, with Danny now joining the Boston Police Department. The series is set to premiere October 17, 2025.

Though based in Boston, the new show is being filmed in Toronto, which offers more affordable production. Even the “New York” scenes are being shot there, explaining the shift in location and cost-saving reasons behind ending Blue Bloods.

Danny still identifies as NYPD in the new footage, suggesting a transition phase before fully moving to Boston. Sean’s presence hints that more Reagan family appearances are likely before Danny’s departure.

Boston Blue introduces new characters, including Sonequa Martin-Green as Lena Silver, Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters, and Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver. Sean’s involvement also offers fans a chance to see familiar faces one more time.

Our Take

Though brief, the footage captures the same intensity and family-driven dynamic that defined Blue Bloods. Danny’s leadership, urgency, and moral compass remain intact. Originally not pitched as a direct sequel, Boston Blue now feels like a natural continuation, keeping the spirit of Blue Bloods alive.
