A New Chapter Begins: Exciting Update on Donnie Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods Spinoff

The Blue Bloods universe expands this fall with Boston Blue, and Donnie Wahlberg is already building excitement. Reprising his role as former NYPD detective Danny Reagan, Wahlberg recently confirmed he’s in Toronto, where the spinoff will film.

“A new day. A new city. A new opportunity. A new adventure. The same gratitude,” Wahlberg wrote on Instagram. He later shared a photo from the first table read, sitting beside co-star Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery), who plays Boston detective Lena Silver. “A new chapter,” he added.

Announced in February 2025, Boston Blue centers on the Silvers, a Boston law enforcement family led by patriarch Reverend Peters (Ernie Hudson). Martin-Green’s Lena is a rising star in the Boston PD, now partnered with Danny. The cast also includes Maggie Lawson, Marcus Scribner, and Gloria Reuben.

Originally developed as a standalone series, CBS later connected the show to Blue Bloods, replacing an LAPD character with Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan.

Will Other Reagans Appear?

Danny is the only confirmed Reagan so far, but Wahlberg hinted at possible cameos: “New York and Boston are really close.”

Why Danny leaves New York remains a mystery, though Wahlberg said it ties to a “big spoiler.” Still, he noted, “As family-oriented as Danny is, he’s also always marched to the beat of his own drum.”

Production on Boston Blue begins soon.
