Blue Bloods stood out among cop dramas for exploring tough issues through the Reagan family’s perspective, blending family values with police stories. But despite its success, CBS ended the series in 2025. Thankfully, a spinoff, Boston Blue, is on the way – and it has a chance to correct one of Blue Bloods’ weakest points.
Blue Bloods’ Bias Against Internal Affairs & Protesters
While the show usually gave multiple sides of an issue, it often portrayed Internal Affairs officers and anti-police violence protesters unfairly. IA characters were cast as antagonists, reflecting the belief among many officers that they “betray” their own. Protesters, meanwhile, were frequently dismissed as misguided or unreasonable-like when Sean’s teacher abandoned her beliefs after witnessing a protest turn violent.
This imbalance undermined Blue Bloods’ otherwise nuanced storytelling, especially since the show had no problem depicting corrupt cops as villains.
Boston Blue’s Opportunity
The spinoff will again focus on a police family, but this time, it will be interracial-allowing the show to address racial bias in policing more directly. With Danny Reagan stepping in as an outsider, Boston Blue could bring fresh perspectives to social issues while keeping the strengths of its predecessor.
If it avoids the biases that sometimes hampered Blue Bloods, the new series could become a worthy successor while carving out its own legacy.
