Sally Kirkland, the icy blonde actress best known for The Sting and her Oscar-nominated role in Anna, has died at 84.
Kirkland passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, in hospice care in Palm Springs, California, her representative Michael Greene confirmed to Variety and the Associated Press. According to a GoFundMe page created for her medical expenses, she suffered a fall in October that left her with rib and foot injuries, leading to her transfer to a care facility for 24-hour assistance. The page also noted that Kirkland lost much of her fortune in 2007 due to poor financial advice.
Over her six-decade career, Kirkland appeared in hundreds of films and TV shows. Her standout performance in 1987’s Anna-as a Czech actress facing career decline-earned her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win for Best Actress in a Drama.
A versatile and prolific performer, Kirkland shared the screen with Hollywood legends including Robert Redford and Paul Newman (The Sting), Barbra Streisand (The Way We Were), Kathy Bates (High Stakes), and Jim Carrey (Bruce Almighty). On television, she made memorable appearances on ‘The Nanny‘, ‘Roseanne‘, and ‘Murder She Wrote‘.
Once a member of Andy Warhol’s Factory, Kirkland leaves behind a legacy defined by resilience, artistry, and a fearless dedication to her craft.
