James Tolkan, the veteran actor known for playing tough authority figures in films like Back to the Future and Top Gun, has died at the age of 94.
His representative confirmed the news, describing Tolkan as a beloved professional who lived a full and meaningful life. No cause of death was disclosed.
Tolkan became widely recognized for his role as strict vice principal Gerald Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy. His character famously called students like Marty McFly a “slacker,” a line that became one of the franchise’s most memorable moments. He reprised the role in the sequels, even portraying Strickland’s ancestor in Back to the Future Part III.
He also left a lasting impression in Top Gun (1986) as the stern naval commander Stinger, delivering the iconic line, “Your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash.”
Throughout his career, Tolkan often portrayed authoritative figures. He appeared in films such as WarGames, Dick Tracy, and Love and Death, where he showcased both dramatic and comedic range.
