What Has ‘NCIS’ Actor Mark Harmon Been Up To Since Leaving the Show..?

NCIS producers have made it abundantly clear that unless the CBS show’s writers create a unique and compelling Leroy Jethro Gibbs-centric storyline, his actor Mark Harmon will not be reprising his role anytime soon. Fans are wondering what the heck the Gibbs actor is up to these days since he’s, at least temporarily, retired from acting after leaving the series after nearly two decades of commitment to his character last fall.

Harmon hasn’t gone too far, as explained immediately after his departure from NCIS. While his character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, is no longer active on set, HELLO! magazine reports that he is still working as an executive producer behind the scenes of NCIS. In fact, when NCIS wrapped its 19th season this spring, longtime star Sean Murray (Special Agent Timothy McGee) revealed Harmon “shows his face” around the set on occasion.

In May, the NCIS star said of the Leroy Jethro Gibbs actor, “He does pop in.” “I saw him about two weeks ago.” So he’s present. It’s not like he’s packed his belongings and left town.”

Furthermore, NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder assured fans that his character’s return is always possible. Binder said of Harmon’s departure in October 2021, “As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the fabric of the show.”

Long-time NCIS viewers are aware that Mark Harmon’s role extends beyond the scope of the popular show. Harmon first appeared as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the earlier series JAG, during two episodes in its eighth season, before making his NCIS debut as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the series pilot episode “Yankee White” in 2003.

For the First Time Since Leaving ‘NCIS,’ Mark Harmon Speaks Out

Fans began clamoring for the character’s return almost immediately after Mark Harmon left his role as Gibbs, arguing about the success of his replacement, Alden Parker (Gary Cole), in comparison to the NCIS stalwart. Mark Harmon, however, has finally spoken out months after leaving the CBS series. And this is what he had to say about his departure.

“What has always drawn me here [to NCIS] is the character I play and the ability to keep it fresh and challenging,” Harmon said. “From a plot standpoint, this character chose the path that it did. I thought it was honest and acceptable.”

Harmon’s statement was included as one of the bonus features in the NCIS season 19 DVD box set. Furthermore, he assured fans that Gibbs is fine, saying, “I’m not retired… As far as I know, the character resides in Alaska.”

Unfortunately, despite the fact that Gibbs is still alive, it does not appear that he will be returning to NCIS anytime soon. Fans can, however, look forward to an exciting all-new crossover event between NCIS and NCIS: Hawai’i when the shows premiere back-to-back on Monday, September 19th at 9 p.m. EST.
