Camilla Carr, Beloved ‘Designing Women’ Actress, Passes Away at 83

Camilla Carr, known for her work in cult horror films and a memorable guest role on Designing Women, has died at 83. She passed away at her home in El Paso, Texas, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease and a dislocated hip, her son confirmed.

Carr began acting in the early 1970s, appearing in films such as A Bullet for Pretty Boy, Don’t Look in the Basement, and Logan’s Run. She became a cult favorite through several collaborations with horror director S.F. Brownrigg, including Don’t Look in the Basement, Poor White Trash II, and Keep My Grave Open.

On television, Carr had a recurring role on the long-running soap Another World, appearing in 34 episodes as Rita Connelly. But one of her most talked-about performances came in a 1987 Designing Women episode, where she portrayed a deeply prejudiced character during a storyline addressing the AIDS crisis – an episode that earned an Emmy nomination for its writing.

After a long break from acting, Carr returned for Don’t Look in the Basement 2, her final screen credit.

Remembered for her intensity on screen and willingness to tackle difficult roles, Carr leaves behind a legacy spanning horror cinema, television drama, and socially impactful storytelling.
