Blue Bloods Finale Shock: The Character Who Should Have Died Instead

Fans got plenty of what they hoped for in the Blue Bloods series finale. Jamie (Will Estes) and Eddie Reagan (Vanessa Ray) are expecting, Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) finally asks Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) out after a heartfelt nudge from Grandpa Henry (Len Cariou), and Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) quietly remarries ex-husband Jack Boyle (Peter Hermann).
All the Reagan grandchildren reunite for a climactic family dinner, while Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) remains unretired and a formidable presence on the force.
The one major disappointment? The decision to k1ll off Luis Badillo (Ian Quinlan). While it hits Eddie hard and raises the stakes, some fans feel the show played it safe.
K1lling a character closer to the Reagans, like Anthony Abetemarco (Steve Schirripa) or a tertiary Reagan such as Joe Hill (Will Hochman), would have been far more shocking-and potentially opened richer storylines.
A death within the core Reagan family would have been bold, painful, and compelling, adding a dramatic weight the finale mostly avoided. Frank exiting the show, for example, could have been iconic, though Blue Bloods has always leaned toward comfort rather than daring storytelling.
Still, the finale leaves open possibilities for the franchise’s future. While showrunner Kevin Wade downplayed a spin-off, Paramount Global co-CEO Brian Robbins has hinted the Blue Bloods universe isn’t finished, and several characters could carry a new series.
