Tom Selleck Sets the Record Straight on ‘Boston Blue’ Cameo Rumors

Tom Selleck has addressed whether he might appear in the new Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, following the original series’ cancellation.
“I don’t know if I would do ‘Boston Blue,’” Selleck, 80, told Hour Detroit. “That’s another show. I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure ‘Blue Bloods’ has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.”
Selleck portrayed Frank Reagan, an NYPD officer and later police commissioner, on Blue Bloods from its 2010 premiere until its finale last year. Despite being one of CBS’s top-rated shows, the network announced its cancellation in November 2023.
“It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it,” Selleck said. “If you get rid of the football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television.”
Speaking to Parade before the finale, Selleck shared his future plans: “A good Western is always on my list. I miss that. I want to sit on a horse again. I would love to do another comedy…the kind that makes people laugh and cry at times.”
While he previously expressed openness to returning as Frank Reagan, no one has asked him yet.
Donnie Wahlberg, who reprises his role as Danny Reagan on Boston Blue, revealed that Selleck is supportive of the spinoff. “Would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely,” Wahlberg said. He added that any return would ultimately be Selleck’s choice: “Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material…we’ll hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart.”
