Why Danny Reagan Deserves the Blue Bloods Spinoff – Even If Jamie and Joe’s Futures Seem More Promising

CBS’ Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, will center on Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg), even though Jamie and Joe Reagan’s storylines seemed more suited for a sequel. The beloved family police drama ended after 14 seasons, despite strong ratings and a fan campaign urging CBS to reconsider its cancelation.

While fans speculated about several possible spinoffs, CBS surprised viewers by announcing Boston Blue, which follows Danny transferring from the NYPD to the Boston PD. The series will introduce his new partner – a member of a well-known Boston police family – preserving the “family values” theme central to Blue Bloods. However, it remains unclear if any other Reagans will appear, making it uncertain whether the show will serve as a true continuation or a standalone procedural featuring Danny.

Why Jamie and Joe Might Have Been Better Spinoff Leads
In the Blue Bloods finale, Jamie and Eddie revealed they’re expecting a baby, while Joe finally embraced his Reagan roots – both storylines that could have driven a compelling sequel. Danny’s ending was less conclusive, focusing on his loneliness and friendship with Baez. Additionally, hints that Jamie and Eddie might move to the suburbs were never explored, leaving potential stories untold.

Why CBS Chose Danny for the Spinoff
Donnie Wahlberg’s star power and commitment to Blue Bloods likely made him the natural choice to lead Boston Blue. As one of the show’s most recognizable faces – and now an executive producer on the spinoff – Wahlberg’s involvement ensures continuity and fan interest. His character’s old-school policing style also provides rich ground for exploring modern law enforcement themes.

Will There Be More Blue Bloods Spinoffs?
While fans might hope for more Reagan-family series, additional spinoffs seem unlikely. CBS’ decision to cancel Blue Bloods was largely due to high production costs, and the network’s primetime schedule leaves limited room for multiple shows from one franchise. Unless future spinoffs move to Paramount+, Boston Blue may be the only continuation fans get – at least for now.
