The Real Reason One ‘Blue Bloods’ Character Was Recast for the Spin-Off

Blue Bloods fans, you might’ve spotted a familiar face with a twist in the new spinoff, Boston Blue, which premiered on CBS on October 17. Sean Reagan, Detective Danny Reagan’s (Donnie Wahlberg) son, looks a little different!
For all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods, Andrew Terraciano played Sean. But in Boston Blue, where Sean has joined the Boston police force, he’s now portrayed by Mika Amonsen.
The spinoff’s co-creators, Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, explained the change to TV Insider. Margolis noted they wanted a “slightly different version of Sean” to reflect his new life on the police force, while still feeling familiar.
“We wanted a character that feels familiar, an actor that does resemble the character that we watched grow up. But as you saw in the pilot, he has made some life changes and having joined the police force, he is really picking up that family mantle,” Margolis said.
Donnie Wahlberg on Moving from NYC to Boston
As for Donnie Wahlberg, reprising his role as Detective Danny Reagan wasn’t an easy decision right after Blue Bloods ended its run in 2024. He admitted on CBS Mornings that he had trouble saying goodbye, especially after 500 crew members lost their jobs.
However, Wahlberg quickly realized that Boston Blue was a chance to continue the legacy of the Reagan family.
“When I got to the point of not seeing this show, Boston Blue, as the nail in Blue Bloods’ coffin, but rather seeing it as the opportunity to keep family faith and tradition on TV… I was like, ‘Oh, this? I have to do this, right?'” he explained.
And for Wahlberg, a proud Bostonian, the move to Boston is a personal full-circle moment. On LIVE with Kelly and Mark, he joked about his character’s journey: “What’s really fun, too, is I’m a Bostonian playing a New Yorker, transplanting to Boston.”
The new series, co-starring Sonequa Martin-Green, is “amazing,” according to Wahlberg, and promises to keep the Reagans’ story alive in a new city.
