‘Boston Blue’ is Bringing Back the Wrong Reagan – and Fans Aren’t Happy

The Blue Bloods universe is expanding with Boston Blue, a Danny Reagan–centered spinoff following Donnie Wahlberg’s beloved detective after the original series ended. While excitement is high, not everyone is thrilled about which members of the Reagan family are making a comeback.
Initially, Boston Blue was expected to focus solely on Danny as he started a new chapter in Boston. But recent casting news revealed that Sean Reagan will return-though portrayed by a new actor. And now, fans have learned that Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan) will also appear in the premiere episode.
Donnie Wahlberg recently shared the first look at Erin’s return, celebrating his on-screen reunion with his TV sister. The pair’s sibling tension was always a highlight of Blue Bloods, so seeing them clash again in Boston should be fun. However, Erin’s appearance seems temporary, and her reason for being in Boston remains unclear-perhaps she’s helping Danny and Sean settle in or working on a case that crosses state lines.
Still, many fans think Boston Blue is missing a bigger opportunity: Joe Hill’s return. Introduced late in the original series, Joe brought depth and conflict to the Reagan family dynamic. His uneasy relationship with Danny and Jamie, and his eventual acceptance into the family, made for compelling storytelling.
Joe’s experience working with federal agencies and his knack for getting involved in cross-jurisdictional cases would have made his presence in Boston feel natural-and far more dramatic. A Danny-and-Joe reunion could reignite their fiery chemistry and continue the Blue Bloods tradition of exploring complex family bonds.
While Erin’s cameo will be a nostalgic treat, Joe Hill’s involvement would have made Boston Blue’s debut truly unforgettable-and a more fitting continuation of the Reagan legacy.
